koshi: When did you first know that fashion was going to be your thing?
Katherine: I can't remember a time when fashion was not important to me, but the first time I realized I could fully indulge my passion and actually do something with it as a job or career was probably about two years ago, with the encouragement of my husband.
k: How is what you're doing now contributing to your vision of what modern style should be?
K: I believe modern dressing is about ease, comfort, and personal style. Proportions and silhouettes will always be changing, but what looks most modern is a woman who is comfortable, confident, and individualistic. I love working with cotton jersey, as you can find fantastic vibrant colors and the weight and softness of the fabric feels and looks wonderful on. I'm very fascinated with one-piece dressing, some of my latest items include jumpsuit's, short suits, and dresses. Just add gorgeous heels and you look amazing!
k: Who do you imagine your typical fan might be?
K: The girl who wears my clothes is me. She wants to have fun with fashion, her clothes speak volumes about what she's feeling inside, and she's not afraid to experiment and be bold~ even if it means making a mistake once in while.
k: How has the internet helped you reach that fan?
K: The internet has changed my life! Especially by being active in fashion forums, it's unbelievable how many amazing girls I've been able to 'meet'! Every time I ship out an order, I get so excited thinking about the girl who will receive it, whether she's in Los Angeles, Ontario, or Guatemala, she'll soon be walking around her city looking chic and effortless in something I made for her!
k: With unlimited resources, what would you do next?
K: Make my own fabrics! I would also love to design shoes!
k: If you could go back in time to replace one of today's iconic fashionistas with one from the past, who would you switch and why?
K: I would replace Carine Rotfield with Coco Chanel. Carine would have been a strange dark horse in the roaring twenties, not unlike Mlle. Chanel herself, actually. But I like to imagine Carine would have brought an edge to the fashions of that day, a darker, smokier, quite dangerous edge. I won't even try to predict how Coco Chanel's energy and unique vision would influence fashion today. She was always so ahead of her time.
k: What can we expect to see from you in the remaining six months of 2004?
K: I'm very excited for fall! I'm planning to make handbags in leather and fur, as well as matching accessories like muffs and boot covers. For the rest of the summer, I'll be focusing on cropped pants and baby-doll dresses and tunics in rich colors.
k: Thanks, Katherine. Your jumpsuit's are divine and we look forward to the handbags.
